MA Board of Education Approves Top Merit Scholarship for Undocumented Students

On Tuesday October 27, Massachusetts’ Board of Higher Education unanimously approved a measure that will allow students with limited legal status to receive the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, which pays for up to eight semesters of tuition at state colleges and universities. The measure went to vote in response to a lawsuit filed by four immigrant students of varying legal statuses, who asserted their eligibility based on high test scores. Prior to the measure, only citizens and green card holders could receive the scholarship;State Education Secretary James Peyser asserts that the change upholds Obama’s executive orders on immigration.
