Are Large, Homogenous Foundations ‘Out of Touch’ with Reality in America?

Are large foundations so ‘beyond’, that they’ve lost touch with reality in America? The Chronicle of Philanthropy puts the question to the test in a new analysis.

The analysis examined America’s wealthiest foundations, considering factors of race, gender, education and residence of trustees to begin unpacking the question.

Of the 232 trustees from top foundations that were examined, the analysis found that only one trustee lives in a one of five states that is considered to have the highest poverty rates; nearly three-fourths of trustees are white, and 63 percent are male; 40 percent have degrees from Ivy Leagues; and more than half of them live in California.

While the level of education of some of America’s strongest and most influential leaders is impressive and promising, the lack of diversity is not. Can a homogenous group of trustees truly understand and grasp the various needs and obstacles of the diverse populations they intend to serve?
