Is Child’s Health Jeoparidized by Computer Screens?

Before, the advice given to parents was that children under 2 years old are discouraged from any screen use and children over two should be limited to two hours a day. Now, as technology takes over our daily lives, the rules have changed a bit to reflect a changing world, where apps like Skype to see a family member or computer apps to complete homework are an integral part of our lives.

The American Academy of Pediatrics published “Growing Up Digital: Media Research Symposium,” an article with tips and guidelines for children’s screen time use, intended to better inform and expand knowledge on previous expert recommendations. While the article seems to open up to the integration of media to adapt to changing times, it has largely been misinterpreted by some to encourage media and screen time for children.

Screen time could be detrimental to a child’s health if it is interfering with their human contact and family time — which, according to AAP, is crucial for brain and health development. The information children may learn from a screen they can also learn from a parent.
