In Some Regions of the U.S., Teachers Cannot Afford to Live on their Salaries

In many regions of the U.S. teachers are “making ends meet” reports USA Today, but in others, like in Miami, no teacher can survive on a teacher’s salary alone, and so many of them have to pick up side hustles, like Ubering.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most starting and even mid-career teachers are getting paid salaries where more than the recommended 30 percent is going to rent alone, while only the majority of senior, top-earning teachers are able to afford paying for their housing with less than 30 percent of their salary.

The data showed that in only 13 of 291 metro areas in the U.S. can new teachers afford to pay rent on their starting salaries.

Though in recent years teachers have gone on strike to raise awareness of the low salaries that come with one of the hardest and most important jobs in the U.S., there are still too many regions in which teachers are not getting paid enough to afford doing what they love.

“They certainly love teaching, but they can’t pay their bills with love,” says Karla Hernandez-Mats, president of the union for teachers in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, who argues that many teachers can’t afford to stick to the career
