Health Issues Impacting Latino Immigrant Community

The fear of deportation has impacted the mental and physical health of Latinos living in the US.

According to recent reports, health problems are plaguing both those who are living in the country illegally as well as their US-born family members.

High levels of stress and anxiety are impacting the Latino community as they fear they will not receive adequate help if their family becomes separated.

“I think the idea of the paradigm has shifted that not only immigrants are being impacted by anti-immigrant legislation, but it’s having spillover effects to non-immigrant US citizens,” said Edward D. Vargas, assistant professor for the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University.

Vargas especially noted a rise in mental health issues among US-born children whose parents and family members are living in the country illegally.
