Former Felons Given Rights to Vote in New Jersey

Former felons have been granted the right to vote in New Jersey, thanks to a recent bill signed by Gov. Phil Murphy. More than 80,000 people who are on probation or parole will have their voting rights restored, reports NPR.

Murphy said that once released from prison, these individuals will “once again walk into a voting booth and have a say in our democracy.”

The law will go into effect in March 2020 and will make NJ one of several states to grant former felons their right to vote.

“These are residents who are living as full participants in their communities and yet have been needlessly prevented from having a voice in the future direction of their communities,” said Murphy, as reported by NPR.
