A newly released Stanford study found that ethnic studies courses for freshmen “boosted the grades, attendance, and course completion of San Francisco students who started high school with an academic record that indicated future failure,” writes the San Francisco Chronicle.
Offered at three San Francisco high schools, the ethnic studies courses introduced students to cultural awareness, ethnic identity and issues of race-based oppression. Struggling students that completed the course in their freshman year went on to get better grades and have better attendance than students who had similar academic records before starting high school.
SF school board member Sandra Fewer asserts that these results could provide justification for offering ethnic-studies courses as early as middle school.
