According to the New York Times, a new businesslike approach to conservation has emerged in U.S. environmentalism and is being used to create a large park in Montana’s northern Great Plains. Acting as a business, the “environmental entrepreneur” group American Prairie Reserve is raising private funds to buy 500,000 acres to unify three million acres of public land.
Foregoing government funding, the group’s practices are “…a hybrid, combining existing public lands with private resources and a businesslike approach to securing land, restoring wildlife and benefiting people,” writes the New York Times.
The American Prairie Reserve and others like them believe that they are filling the void where governments are unable or unwilling to act to protect the natural environment.
