Ending Food Waste Helps to Slow Environmental Spiral

Food waste varies from country to country, but studies have shown time and again that food waste is one of the biggest contributors to climate change because greenhouse gases are emitted.

In fact, one third of greenhouse gas emissions come from food production, and 40 percent of all food produced in the US is wasted. Whether we let our foods spoil, or perfectly healthy foods never make it to store shelves due to their “imperfect shape,” – food is constantly wasted.

Some suggestions for reducing food waste include:

  • Making recipes based off of the food that you already have.
  • Learning to make soups or mixes of veggies that can generally turn very quickly.
  • Making and sticking to grocery lists.

Experts also note that meat consumption and waste results in higher carbon emissions.
