With the recent expansion of publicly funded preschool programs, more children are learning educational concepts that are often introduced in grammar school.
In a new study conducted by researchers at University of California, Berkeley, the average curriculum for preschools fails in fully educating its 4 to 5 year old students.
While some believe enriched math and phonics programs will not be fully grasped by younger students, advocates of implementing rigorous preschool curriculums state the change will help children throughout their formal education.
“Simply dressing up like a firefighter or building an exquisite Lego edifice may not be enough,” stated Bruce Fuller, the lead author of the study who advocates for a more extensive preschool curriculum.
“If you can combine creative play with rich language, formal conversations and math concepts, that’s more likely to yield the cognitive gains we observed,” he added.
