A new chapter of the national organization “Showing Up for Racial Justice” (SURJ) recently opened in Durham, North Carolina. The nonprofit works to end racial injustice by helping white people effectively fight systemic racism through racial bias education and solidarity training.
Explaining their core value of effective solidarity, the chapter’s organizer, Jenn Frye, said to the Durham News&Observer, “We want to call people in, not call people out.”
Over half the respondents to a PBS Newshour/Marist poll said they think race relations are worse than they were a year ago. In this climate, SURJ’s work of internally challenging white supremacy is an important piece in the puzzle of solving racial inequality.
