A new United Nations report announced that the world is quickly consuming and depleting the earth’s natural resources at an unsustainable rate.
The richest nations in the world are particularly at fault, consuming at least 10 times the natural resources when compared to poorer countries. The International Resources Panel concluded that the rate of extraction of natural resources has tripled in the last 40 years.
In 1970, consumption of natural resources was approximately 22 billion tons globally, and in 2010, consumption was over 70 billion tons. At this rate, the report claimed, consumption patterns will demand 180 billion tons of natural resources in 2050, which will not be possible.
A combination of policy changes and implementation of sustainable plans for extracting natural resources are necessary measures that need to be taken to prevent complete and ‘irreversible depletion’ of some of the world’s most important natural resources.
