Deaths Caused by Drug Overdose Greater than Deaths by Breast Cancer

According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics there were more than 63,000 deaths in 2016 alone caused by drug overdose, while the number of deaths caused by breast cancer were about 41,000.

Data indicates that deaths caused by opioids are officially higher than those caused by breast cancer — worrisome numbers as the opioid crisis continues to worsen.

Deadly overdoses caused by the rise in use of synthetic opioids have skyrocketed by 88 percent each year since 2013, according to CNN, going from under 10,000 in 2015 to nearly 20,000 deaths in 2016.
