With the recent transition of health records being transcribed on electronic databases, many doctors and officials are concerned by imminent cyber threats that could negatively impact hospitals across the US.
Compared to a decade ago in which medical records were kept on paper, most medical institutions rely solely on computers to track information and medication.
“The last thing anybody wants to happen in their organization is have all their heart monitors disabled or all of their IV pumps that provide medication to a patient disabled,” said Theresa Meadows, Chief Information Officer of Cook Children’s Hospital.
However, many healthcare providers are reluctant to pursue cases that cover hacktivism and cyberterrorism.
Hospital officials are examining ways in which cybersecurity can be heighted to protect the health of its patients.
