Criminal Records Prevent Many From Ever Having a Chance to Succeed in Life After Prison

For many former felons, attending a college or university is out of the question because many higher education institutions will ask about criminal history.

According to data, at least 70 percent of four-year universities ask about criminal history, with 81 percent of private colleges asking about criminal history and only 40 percent of community colleges asking about criminal history.

Former felons who want to pursue higher education often have to resort to online programs or community college, but even then, there is a lot of work to be done to have a chance at being accepted.

Experts recommend that students with criminal records who want to pursue higher education seek assistance from local reintegration programs and also still seek assistance from FAFSA, because receiving aid could largely depend on the type of offense rather than the record overall.
