Earlier this week scientists announced a successful transplant of coral that was bred in one part of the Great Barrier Reef.
Scientists successfully collected coral spawn and eggs and transplanted them into areas of the ocean where corals were damaged by bleaching.
Researchers said that upon returning to the site where the coral had been planted, they found that the new coral thrived.
The success of the project could mean that transplanting corals could “save” ecosystems where coral reefs are dying at alarming rates.
“The results are very promising and our work shows that adding higher densities of coral larvae leads to higher numbers of successful coral recruits,” said lead researcher Peter Harrison.
