Community Colleges Face Big Challenges with Enrollment

As funding for community colleges has declined, so has enrollment, and it’s not getting any better according to research from EAB, an education research and technology company.

One of the biggest factors leading to a decline in enrollment is the number of adults, 25 and older, who are not enrolling in higher education and going into the workforce when the economy is getting stronger. A second factor is a decline in the number of college-aged students between 18 and 22 that are enrolling in colleges because of the smaller population of students.

Additionally community colleges are faced with the task of improving graduation rates and boosting numbers of students who are transferring to four-year institutions.

However, community colleges have simultaneously lost funding and are expected to meet the same requirements as four-year institutions in some cases.
