Citizen Schools Provides Educational Enrichment to Low-Income Students in Oakland

The Boston-based nonprofit Citizen Schools has been transforming education at low-income schools since its founding 20 years ago and some of its most successful programs are in Oakland, CA. At East Oakland, Greenleaf Elementary School, sixth graders participate in a dynamic, after-school science program that teaches applied skills through fun experiments.

This program and others funded by Citizen Schools ensure that low-income students have access to educational enrichment opportunities that are otherwise only available to students with financial means. As the founders of the Citizen Schools know, piquing academic interest with expanded learning at the elementary and middle school levels helps keep students in school and break cycles of poverty.
