Cannabis Industry May Be Contributing to Air Pollution through Terpenes

NPR reports that concerns are growing over whether the ever-expanding cannabis industry is contributing to air pollution through terpenes, the organic compounds that make the plant smell.

Though legal in many states, under the federal law, it is illegal and therefore a hard industry to study when it comes to finding out how it impacts the environment.

The field does use lots of water and energy, reports NPR, but the types of gases the plant itself emits can be harmful when combined with other gases to create ozone layer.

A large scale study is currently not possible because by federal law, it is illegal. Therefore, states and individual researchers are stepping in to further explore how the industry could be impacting the environment.
