California Federal Judge Affirms ICE Decision to Separate Immigrant Families

A recent decision by a California federal judge reaffirmed that it is up to immigration officials to separate children from their parents at their own discretion, reports CBS.

The ACLU sought to new guidelines to restrict how immigration officials handled situations of immigrant families, hoping to reduce how many children were removed from their parents for no reason, but federal judge Judge Dana Sabraw of the U.S. District Court in San Diego ruled in favor of the administration.

Sabraw “believes the administration has been largely complying with the ruling he issued in June 2018,” reports CBS, “which barred separations ‘absent a determination that the parent is unfit or presents a danger to the child.’”

The ACLU has argued that the administration is using any means to separate families, and has since still separated more than 1,000 children from their parents.
