Brain Development in Children Altered by Too Much Time in Front of Phones and Computers

Children between the ages of three and five who are in front of screens for more than the recommended amount of time (an hour a day) are experiencing lower levels of brain development, according to a new study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

An area in the brain that is critical to developing language skills has been shown to have less growth in children who spend too much time in front of screens. Though several studies have shown that there has been an increase in the number of youths with their own computers and phones in the last decade, this new study points to how that is actually impacting them.

“This is important because the brain is developing the most rapidly in the first five years,” said author of the study Dr. John Hutton.

“That’s when brains are very plastic and soaking up everything, forming these strong connections that last for life.”
