Blood banks are experiencing shortages in donations due to extreme weathers that have caused several blood drives to shut down.
President and CEO of Community Blood Services says that it’s difficult for blood donations to be maintained for too long, for example blood platelets can only be preserved for 5 days he explained.
More than 150 blood drives were cancelled during winter storms last week, and such shortages can be dangerous in situations where blood banks should be prepared to have a large supply of blood in case of an emergency or disaster.
Community Blood Services and Red Cross are some of the largest blood banks for the nation and they need more donors.
