Big-Name Foundations Shift Giving to Social Justice Issues

The nation’s most well known foundations have some big giving goals for this year; and they don’t include the usual suspects (i.e. hospitals, universities, museums). Instead, foundations like Ford, MacArthur, and Rockefeller are shifting their giving to focus on progressive issues concerning social justice. The head of the Bridgespan Group, William Foster, labels these new giving commitments “big bets.”

For the MacArthur Foundation, the big bets are climate change and criminal justice reform. For the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, they are combating inequality and building sustainable communities. Despite the difficulties of social justice giving, foundation leaders remain undaunted on this innovative route to social good.
