A study found that babies that are born prematurely are likely to catch up with their peers by elementary and middle school.
Published in JAMA Pediatrics, the study explores how babies born prematurely – that is before 37 weeks of pregnancy – perform academically, in relation to their peers.
Many of them in fact, two-thirds of the 1.3 million babies examined in the study, were “ready for kindergarten on time,” the report says, and some of them achieved higher academic performance.
Author of the study, Dr. Craig Garfield says the results are reassuring and can help put more parents of prematurely born babies at ease.
Future studies will examine which factors determine whether a prematurely born baby will perform well academically later on in life.
