Access to Clean Water Improving Worldwide

As of 2015, 90% of the human population has access to clean water. That means that in the last 25 years, 2.6 billion people across the globe have gained new access to improved, drinkable water.

Yet there are still regional disparities that leave 663 million still without access.

A compilation by National Geographic demonstrates a steady decrease in the number of people without access to clean water in rural areas and shows relatively low improvements for urban areas in providing access to clean water. Yet overall, the access to clean water for rural remains higher, at 96% compared to 84% access for rural areas.

Furthermore, according to National Geographic, regional divides show drastic needs for improvements to clean water access in Central Asia, North and Sub Saharan Africa, and Oceania.
