According to a new report from the American Thoracic Society Utah is ranked as one of the top 5 states where cases of lung cancer are caused by air pollution.
“For some unfortunate people, it may actually trigger lung cancer,” said one author of the study, while discussing the negative impact of air pollution on the health of thousands of Americans.
The study found that somewhere between 4 to 29 people develop lung cancer as result of exposure to particulate matter in the air.
This data was surprising to researchers, as smoking as a cause of lung cancer is “not particularly prevalent” in Utah. Additionally, the proportion of lung cancer cases caused by pollution is higher than other states.
