Vanity Art Exhibits Creating Controversy over Art Criticism

The Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles is contributing to a current trend in becoming a vanity art museum.

The museum, which is opening at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, will feature art privately-owned by collectors.

Rather than donating artwork to larger institutions, more collectors are allowing smaller museums to borrow and showcase their works for exhibits.

Art collectors receive tax benefits from showcasing their private collections, and the exhibits in which their collections are shown allow the general public to view new trends in contemporary art.

However, critics have questioned the purpose of the vanity exhibits by arguing the artworks are too current to be of cultural relevance to the general public.
