Trump Administration Seeks to Increase Number of Beds in Private Prisons

A new notice from the US Bureau of Prisons to Criminal Alien Requirement facilities (CAR) suggests a potential increase of up to 1500 extra spaces for prisoners.

The CAR facilities are privately managed prisons that are used for non-US citizens, reported CNN.

The Obama administration sought to decrease the number of prisoners held in CAR facilities, and under the Trump administration, the numbers could soar to well over 20,000 inmates held in private CAR facilities.

“[CAR facilities] simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources; they do not save substantially on costs; and as noted in a recent report by the Department’s Office of Inspector General, they do not maintain the same level of safety and security,” said former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, who was rescinded by Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
