Special Education Homeschool Option Works for Some Families in America

The option to opt out of public school services and accept grants for a homeschool education is an alternative that has worked reasonably well for some families in America.

For some families of students with special education needs, being able to homeschool children through the Gardiner Scholarship – a program under ‘school choice’ – has been incredibly helpful.

On several occasions, the $10,000 grants awarded by the program have allowed parents to create highly personal curriculum and learning spaces for their children with various disabilities, such as a autism or down syndrome.

Although the pending controversial education bill in Florida would increase funds for the Gardiner Scholarship program by $30 million, that program also undercuts educational opportunities for students attending public schools; furthermore, in accepting grants from the Gardiner Scholarship, families and students lose their rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which ensures an appropriate, free, high-standard education.
