A group of scientists warn the Earth’s sixth mass wildlife extinction may be imminent following a “biological annihilation.”

The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicates that both common and rare species have been lost due to human overpopulation and overconsumption.

Calling the recent findings a “frightening assault on the foundations of human civilization,” the researchers warn that species are becoming extinct at faster rates.

According to the report, nearly half of the 177 species monitored lost more than 80% of their populations worldwide.

“All signs point to ever more powerful assaults on biodiversity in the next two decades, painting a dismal picture of the future of life, including human life,” the report stated.
