Safety of Seniors Questioned During Times of Crisis

Recent natural disasters across the US have prompted activists to question current regulations regarding vulnerable seniors.

In wildfires that destroyed much of Northern California, individuals in their 70s and 80s succumbed to what officials are calling preventable deaths.

Some nursing homes and care takers are were unable to safely evacuate the elderly, prompting officials to reexamine the ways in which seniors can be helped during times of crisis.

Furthermore, many who perished in the fires refused to leave their homes as many seniors fear uncertain futures when natural disasters occur.

“In times of disasters, or often in everyday living, older adults who are vulnerable can often be invisible, and they may not always ask for the help that they need,” said senior activist Marsh Ryerson.
