Scientists in Antarctica are concerned an ice sheet will soon break off and form into one of the largest icebergs in the world.

Larsen C can potentially cause damage to ships in the area as it measures 2,300 square miles, the size of more than seven New York Citys.

The ice sheet is set to follow its predecessors, Larsen A and B, which both broke away due to increased temperatures within the area.

Researchers monitoring the situation are uncertain when the potential iceberg will form but warned it could break into pieces, causing hazards for ships.

The European Space Agency is tracking the ice sheet and will monitor the changes in the volume of the Earth’s ice once it breaks.
