According to a study commissioned by Orb Media, tap water samples have been identified as containing microplastic materials.

Researchers found that 83% of the samples retrieved from twelve nations were contaminated with plastic fibers.

The US had the highest rate of microplastic substances based on water found at Congress buildings and the headquarters of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Scientists warn the contamination has already impacted the environment and will ultimately affect humans.

“We have enough data from looking at wildlife, and the impacts that it’s having on wildlife, to be concerned,” said Dr. Sherri Mason, a microplastic expert at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
