Nonprofits Urge Congress to Keep Politics Out of Nonprofit Missions

A coalition of almost 4,500 nonprofit and charitable organizations signed the Community Letter In Support of Nonpartisanship, urging Congress to maintain the law that protects nonprofits from being influenced by partisan politics.

This letter is the second major communication to Congress this week in regards to this issue.

Earlier this week, almost 100 religious organizations from a variety of faiths delivered a letter to Congress declaring their opposition against “any effort to weaken or eliminate protections.”

Vikki Spruill, President and CEO of the Council on Foundations, states that charity and nonprofits give citizens the opportunity to serve for the causes and issues that are relevant to their passions and experiences. However, “For them to continue to fulfill this purpose, it is crucial that the public trust they have earned over the years is not diminished by partisan labels or influence.”
