Newly Passed Legislation Introduces Budget Cuts to Education in Rural North Carolina

Republicans in the North Carolina Senate introduced an amendment to the state’s budget that would include an allotment of $1 million to help fight the state’s opioid epidemic. The legislation, however, requires withdrawing funds from education programs in poor areas.

One of the areas that will be the most affected includes a rural district in the northeastern part of the state which will be stripped of more than $300,000 in funding for its early college high schools, reported Washington Post.

The amendment was passed late last week and also included budget cuts to programs for teachers that are working on a college degree.
