Shortly after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved the completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline project, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe filed a lawsuit that seeks to restrain construction and drilling around Lake Oahe, land that the Standing Rock Sioux tribe has previously defended as belonging to Native American tribes, not federally owned.
The lawsuit maintains that the body of water surrounding the area is used for religious practices and the DAPL will “desecrate” the area and violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act; the lawsuit might halt the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, once again, before a hearing will be held at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
