The Link Between Fossil Fuels and Poverty

A common argument by the fossil fuel industry is that the use of coal and oil can help developing nations rise above poverty, but a new analysis finds that coal will increase global warming and negatively impact communities that are already suffering from poverty.

A new report by Oxfam, the international group of nonprofits dedicated to alleviating poverty around the world, offers an in-depth look at the impacts of fossil fuels on impoverished communities.

Some of the world’s most impoverished communities will be the ones affected the most by the impacts of burning fossil fuels, such as global warming and the resulting rising sea levels and variable growing seasons – especially farmers and families living on the coasts. Furthermore, the report outlines the various ways in which more pollution will create more health hazards, leading to disease and death among the world’s vulnerable populations.
