UNICEF released a new report stating that sexual abuse, exploitation, violence, and detention have become increasingly common among refugee women and children along the Central Mediterranean migration route.
“The Central Mediterranean from North Africa to Europe is among the world’s deadliest and most dangerous migrant routes for children and women,” said Afshan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director and Special Coordinator for the Refugee and Response Crises in Europe, as reported by Al Jazeera.
UNICEF researchers interviewed 122 refugees – 82 women and 42 children – and three-quarters of the children who were interviewed said they had experienced abuse by adults, and approximately one-third had been abused in Libya. However, most of the children did not identify their abuser, and some said their abusers wore uniforms or were associated with the military.
