Afghanistan ranks as one of the most dangerous places in the world for women because the Taliban now controls one-third of the country.

The main organization that is focused on this challenge is Women for Afghan Women (WAW), which is a “grassroots, civil society organization dedicated to securing and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York.”

Donor foundations, including NoVo Foundation and the van Ameringen Foundation, have provided financial support to WAW. WAW received a commitment of $750,000 earlier this year from a consortium of funders.

WAW is the only organization in Afghanistan that provides resources and services to women and children. The group has helped over 20,000 clients and trained more than 300,000 people in women’s rights.
