According to a report published by ProPublica, alternative education programs are failing to graduate students despite their high enrollment rates.
Half a million students in the US are enrolled in nontraditional education programs that allow them to earn their high school diplomas or vocational certificates through online courses.
With the increase of students enrolled in alternative programs, researchers found that the No Child Left Behind Act could prevent individuals from succeeding after graduation.
“No Child Left Behind was supposed to improve educational outcomes for students long overlooked– including those who were black, Hispanic, and low- income,” the report from ProPublica stated.
However, decreased funding to nontraditional and alternative programs has caused the majority of students to discontinue their education paths.
